RAKER
1. noun
Remote Armed Kinesthetic Engagement & Reconnaissance android, used primarily by Fire Departments and Police Departments in the United States. RAKERs are deployed for rescue, bomb disposal, and other tasks which are deemed too dangerous for humans. Some models are being manufactured for the armed forces to serve as offensive battlefield weapons.
Christopher A. Gray’s RAKER follows an incident one evening when Dr. Norman Stravinsky sends his RAKER android out to deliver a sensitive file to a colleague. When it encounters a crime in progress, the android must decide whether to interrupt its primary duties as bodyguard to Stravinsky in order to prevent the crime from continuing. The decision results in a confrontation between itself and the Seattle Police Department.

RAKER eBook Christopher A Gray Reviews
Entertaining short story that touches on the implications of how autonomous androids and their artificial intelligence will change societal situations.
Do you like science fiction fantasy?
Do you have five minutes or so to spare?
Pick up this free short story about a technologically advanced android and what happens when an immovable object (the android) comes in contact with a human police force that desires to take him into the station while investigating an altercation.
Plato's primary mission is to act as bodyguard to Dr. Norman Stravinsky.
The Doctor had sent him on an important mission.
A standard Raker has a handler, but Plato is special. He is as close to sentient as he could be, without being human.
On the return trip, Plato comes across a crime in progress.
What would he do? He is only a machine, but.....
How would you feel about an artificial intelligence that could, more or less, eliminate poverty and religious fanatics?
What would you give up?
Your privacy?
You freedom of choice?
Technology has become such a part of the human world, that most people, whether they realize it or not, have given up their privacy.
Raker is an interesting glimpse into a world where technology makes the world a better place, but at what cost.
How can you convince human beings, that a machine capable of destroying them, can be trusted to 'make the right choice?'
I really enjoyed this short story and at times I feared for Plato. I related to him as if he was human, not a machine.
Nearly pointless..
The author paints a decent picture of an interesting world, but without the benefit of an actual story to hold one's interest. A good author could have put the same information into an actual plot instead of just a teaser-like introduction that is useless as anything other than an advertisement for future works.
This "story" sets up the world and introduces a conflict -- and then it stops. There is no plot, no suspense, and no decent characterization either. In short, zero literary value. It's not a story, it's an advert.
The world is interesting though, and it raises some discussion points about the treatment of autonomous machines that aren't considered sentient. So that's why two stars instead of one. Although I'm tempted to knock it down one for unbelievability. If the specs of the robot are publicly known, then authorities would not try to apprehend it by force without having weapons that can affect it. They would attempt to obtain voluntary cooperation and then arrange for SUFFICIENT force for backup. The events as described in this simply aren't believable. So that's yet another mark against the “story ".
I enjoyed this story. I like the idea and the way the story unfolded. More than willing to read more like this.
RAKER is not bad for a short story. In fact it is rather well-written as far as story mechanics go. The author creates an fascinating world and populates it with interesting characters to tell a thought-provoking tale. Yet, it falls short and fails to deliver a satisfying conclusion because the author is using this story to promote his other, longer works set in the same world as RAKER.
World not so distant in future but advanced enough to create mobile AI (robots).
Story presents important questions about how to integrate AI into our society and shows us a little of possible interactions.
It is short story (only 30, max 60 minutes) so those considerations are not very extensive.
The plot of this story is just a helper but OK.
A science fiction short read about an autonomous robot made to protect a very special genius. The robot is the only one of his kind. He stops some dirty cops while he is on an errand. This is the story of the fallout.
